Assistant Professor Sheila Lorenzo de la Pena (PennWest University, USA) will introduce the concept of el duende, where a piece is worked on with a focus on process versus product for a determined amount of time – a month, 2 months, a semester. The process is documented through photos and discussed throughout between supervisor and supervisee. As supervisor and supervisee struggle through the layers and successive visits to the piece, insights begin to emerge. Having practised el duende for 3 years, Sheila still continues to learn something new. Supervisees usually have no experience with this method and tend to see more pointed struggles, changes and adaptations (in themselves). Nurturing and helping solidify the connection to/with our creative practice makes us stronger clinicians. As the creative practice deepens and matures, so does how we present that to those we work with.
