An assemblage of knowing: Three working-values. An overall style to support companioning the delicate weave of a body with/in pain to lessen the risk of more pain.
For this presentation, I will return to a creative synthesis formed as a way to consolidate research knowings from my doctoral inquiry: An Artistic Holding of Mended Bodies in Pain. A form of mending through therapeutic arts-based inquiries. In physical form, the creative synthesis is a collection of three textile panels, constructed from deconstructed rabbits who were small companions, supporting me to 'go inside' the experiences of living with post-operative ongoing or persistent pain. The cluster of materials on each panel spoke to me of the importance of attraction, care and absorption, to lessen the risk of further damage or harm to a body with/in pain when engaging in forms of mending using the arts therapeutically. I have called these three attributes my 'working values'. I look forward to sharing what I came to know with my fellow Creative Arts Therapists, in the hope of furthering a nuanced approach in our practice especially for people who are always in (or never far from) feeling pain.
