This workshop is designed for practising clinicians and Arts Therapy students who would like to achieve a better understanding for how clients' attachment styles present in the arts therapy process and is experienced by both the client and the clinician. As commonly seen, clients’ attachment styles, and the problematic perceptions, attitudes, and behaviours consistent with their attachment style shadow clients across time zones, locations, and interpersonal relationships. A person’s attachment style impacts upon almost every person with whom they develop a relationship, including their therapist. This introductory workshop will provide a brief overview of attachment styles using a two-dimensional approach in terms of avoidance of intimacy and anxiety over abandonment (Bowlby, 1969; Miller, 2007). It will also discuss simple practical strategies on how to navigate attachment avoidance dynamics in the art therapy process, helping clinicians feel safe, effective, and positive about their work with clients with various attachment styles.
